While reading about Dan Edelman originating the
media tour, a thought occurred to me that I have had many times before. Are all
the big ideas gone?
I used to have this feeling as a child when
discovering all the new things life had to offer, and wishing I were the one
who had thought of the idea. This is still a feeling I get whenever I see
something new on the market. I see invention after invention and think to myself
that this must be it; this is the last great idea! Clearly, this is foolish and
I am always quick to push that feeling away.
I want to change the way people see things. Be it
ordinary or extraordinary things. I think Dan Edelman shared this trait too. He
wanted to change the way people saw something as simple as hair care. And he
did.
I think it’s possible to change the world in ways
people may never notice, or in ways everyone notices. But no matter what you
do, leave your mark. Intrapreneuer, or entrepreneur just make something new and
keep the wheel going. If I have learned anything from reading Dan Edelman’s
book it would be this, "Be creative. Strive for the
big idea. Be realistic, but dare to be different."
Having a
big idea isn’t the hard part. The hard part is getting past the fear that such
a big idea brings. The fear is what keeps so many from going after what they
want. Dan Edelman saw a big idea and did something. He took his idea and he
made it a reality. That big idea was what catapulted him into the success he
had.
So I ask you
to be one thing: ful. Hopeful, thoughtful, tasteful, and powerful. It takes
courage to create a big idea, and it never happens overnight. Stick with it.
